SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  1. Submissions dates for the FABJ Broadcast Excellence Contest will be accepted beginning SPRING 2020, with details to be announced by WINTER 2019.

  2. All entries must have aired between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.

  3. Entries must be their on-air version. An entry cannot be a re-creation.

  4.  There is a 15-minute time limit for entries, except as noted in the rules specific to the category. 

  5. There is no limit to the number of entries a station or individual may submit in any single category. An entry in one category may also be submitted in another applicable category, unless otherwise noted, if the proper fees are paid each time.

  6. No more than three names may be included per entry. If more than two people are involved in producing the work the award will be presented to the news organization. Anyone involved in a winning story may purchase an award with their own name on it after the banquet through Edco.com.

  7. The decision of the judges is final. There may not be an award given for every category.

  8. SPANISH entries in all categories are welcome. An English transcript MUST be provided for judges.

  9. All entries for the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists’ Annual Broadcast Excellence Contest
    are submitted using a web-based program at https://betternewspapercontest.com/contests/find_contest

  10. All PROFESSIONAL and COLLEGE entries are submitted in the same process, but are two separate
    contests.

  11. First and second place awards will be given in broadcast categories.

  12. All entries and online payments must be received at the date prescribed above.

 

ENTRY FEES

The fee for all professional entries is $80 per entry. The fee for all college entries is $25. 

Entry fees may only be paid electronically via the BetterBNC contest website

 

CATEGORIES: COLLEGE TELEVISION & RADIO

COLLEGE TV NEWSCAST: Up to 30 minutes

COLLEGE RADIO NEWSCAST: Up to 15 minutes

GENERAL ASSIGNMENT | COLLEGE TELEVISION
A single general assignment story that is produced and aired within a 24 hour period | Up to 5 minutes

BREAKING NEWS | COLLEGE TELEVISION

On-the-scene coverage of an unscheduled breaking news story. This category recognizes the achievement of an individual (reporter, photographer, producer, etc.) in their individual role, as opposed to “station breaking news” category which recognizes all of the employees as a whole | Up to 10 minutes

CONTINUING COVERAGE | COLLEGE TELEVISION

Continuing coverage of a single story or topic (brush fire, trial, law enforcement investigation, legislative issue, etc.) | Not to be a documentary | This entry could be a compilation of at least 3 stories. Your entry must not exceed a total of 20 minutes.

CONTINUING COVERAGE | COLLEGE RADIO

INVESTIGATIVE | COLLEGE TELEVISION

An in-depth single expose report or series of a single subject | Entry can be up to 10 minutes.

FEATURE | COLLEGE TELEVISION
For excellence in a feature that covers a singular issue, topic or subject. This feature story can be “hard news” or “light news” in nature | Entry may not exceed 15 minutes.

For excellence in a feature that covers a singular issue, topic or subject. This feature story can be “hard news” or “light news” in nature | Entry may not exceed 15 minutes.

POLITICS/GOVERNMENT/ELECTIONS REPORTING – COLLEGE TELEVISION
A single story or series relating to politics, government, or election matters | Entry may be up to 10 minutes total.

WEATHER REPORTING | COLLEGE TELEVISION

Any single spot or long form report on a weather-related event. This may include a mix of in-studio and field reporting of an active storm situation, storm clean up, long term weather impacts on the environment, etc, so long as meteorological impact is the focus of the story | Entry should not exceed 10 minutes.
